Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Hobbes
Materialist - Considers all to be matter in motion (influenced by the physics of Gallileo and the physiology of Harvey).
Contractarian - Holds that in a state of nature man is engaged in a war of all against all. For his own survival man must submit to the authority of a sovereign who has the power to enforce laws and punish transgressors. This power of the soveriegn is initially derived from a covenant between the subjects (not between subjects and sovereign, since the latter is the law and, therefore, not subject to it).
Egoist - Asserts the primary motivation of individuals is preservation of life, the pursuit of pleasure, and the avoidance of pain.
Moral relativist - In that Hobbes acknowledges one man's "good" may be another man's "evil."
